How can Local and Regional authorities act effectively in Development cooperation

The seminar, entitled ‘‘the conditions for effective action by local/regional governments’’ was organised by PLATFORMA in the Committee of the Regions in March 2009.  The diversity of the local and regional European and International participants was reinforced by the active participation of representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions and the European NGO Confederation, CONCORD. 

During this first European seminar, members of PLATFORMA brought to the table the vision of local and regional authorities on a subject at the heart of international cooperation: water and sanitation.  They have resituated decentralised cooperation in relation to the fight against poverty and the agendas of the Milennium Development Goals and also in relation to aid effectiveness through the Declaration of Paris and the Accra action programme.
