From actors for development to strategic partners - local and regional governments and the European Commission sign a Strategic Partnership
PLATFORMA-CEMR, AIMF, CLGF, UCLG and UCLG Africa have entered into the first ever Strategic Partnership with the European Commission Directorate for International Development and Cooperation (DG DEVCO-EuropeAid), representing the culmination of a long journey to secure the recognition of local and regional governments (LRG) in the European Union’s external action as political actors and as components essential to the development of democratic societies.
The Latvian Presidency of the European Council: priorities in the field of international cooperation
Latvia has begun its six-month Presidency of the European Council which, in light of the global importance of the year 2015, and guided by the principles of involvement, growth and sustainability, will place particular attention on reinforcing the role of the European Union as a global actor and on building a space of security and prosperity in the neighbouring regions.
Citizen in Europe, Citizen in the World
Discussing citizens engagement in development issues, the PLATFORMA workshop “Citizen in Europe, Citizen in the World”, organised in the context of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions’ (CEMR) conference on citizenship and twinning, underlined the need to develop a new narrative for decentralised cooperation which focuses on the involvement of citizens and on fostering local governance.
